Pest ell it's that time of year again, the weather is turning V cold, so time to put away the T shirts and shorts and get out the winter clothes. It's been a funny old year for all of us including our insects and animals which are now looking for somewhere to live. Queen Wasp with a season's young inside her looking to hibernate, rats and mice moving out of fields as the farmer ploughs, and so we must be vigilant and take basic precautions against casual invasion of wildlife into our homes. Lets look at the House Mouse, one or two into the house could be just the start of a problem, if they can get food they will breed, there is enough food in the base of your toaster to feed a family of mice. Mice are cereal eaters, so any kind of seed eg: Pot-pourri, dried food, rice etc: they do not need water, can jump, climb, run up a smooth wall, get through a crack smaller than a pencil, if you can press the pile of your carpet down and push your finger under the door they can get through. They love to chew the casing on electric wires which can cause fires so do not let them get established. Government guidelines for traps is that you need 3 traps for every mouse or they will breed faster than you catch them, if your garage is attached to or part of your house and pipes and wires go through that is another point of entry. You can get traps that catch them alive but please do not let them go in the garden they will be back in the house before you. Rats next month. Stay Well, Stay Safe.
